 VAHMRS SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS

The Virginia Association of Hazardous Materials Response Specialists is proud to offer scholarship and grant funding opportunities. VAHMRS members (or if applicable, spouse or child of a member) in good standing (annual dues must be current) are eligible for application. Sums of less than the amount noted may be awarded at the discretion of the Scholarship and Grant Committee. Multiple grants totaling the annual cap may also be awarded. The Executive Board of the VAHMRS has the right to adjust this amount or forgo this amount at any time it is deemed in the best interest of the Association. Applicants are encouraged to provide comprehensive narrative and documentation with the application as the Scholarship and Grant Committee use this as the basis for awarding the grants. Completed applications must be received by August 1, 2017.  
 
There are three (3) opportunities available. Click on the heading to access the application form: 
 
1.   VAHMRS Haz-Mat Equipment & Training Grantthis grant has an annual cap of $2000.00. The purpose of the grant is to support departments across the Commonwealth in the purchase of haz-mat specific equipment or in-house training they may not otherwise be able to afford on their own without assistance. (Note: the training piece of this grant is NOT to be confused with monies offered through the Norman McTague Conference Scholarship.). 
 
2.      The Walt Sivertson Memorial Scholarshipthis scholarship is issued in memory of Walt Sivertson who served as a member of Newport News Fire Department, was instrumental in establishing haz-mat response in the Tidewater area, and who was killed in the line-of-duty in 1993. There is a $1000.00 annual cap on this scholarship. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist members (or their family) address college tuition, housing, meals, and books while pursuing a major aligned with the mission of the Association.
 
3.      The Norman McTague Conference Scholarshipthis scholarship is issued in memory of Norm McTague who was an influential figure in the state hazardous materials response community and a founding member of this Association. There is a $1000.00 annual cap on this scholarship and is issued to multiple recipients. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist members (or teams) attend the annual conference they may not otherwise be able to attend on their own without assistance. Monies for hotel rooms and registration are handled by the Association and not awarded directly to the recipient. Monies for food are not reimbursable.
